Use: Sea holly is a perfect plant for dry, sunny areas with poor gravelly soil. This plant is often planted for the handsome, leathery foliage rather than the thistle-like flowers. When the plant is in flower it looks stiff and prickly and it looks better as a single specimen plant rather than massed. The flowers are a pretty steel blue and mature flowers keep the color when dried.
Culture: This plant has long taproots and can withstand drought. Sea holly is a permanent plant that never needs dividing, which is fortunate because it is difficult to transplant once established.
