Use: These lupines have large spiky flower stalks in shades of blue, purple, red, rust, bronze, and cream on strong stems. Lupines are probably best planted singly or in small groups of 3 or 4. Avoid overplanting them in one border so large gaps won't be left after their relatively short flowering season.
Culture: lupines like neutral to acid soil with plenty of organic matter. They have deep taproots and are hard to dig up and transplant once established. You can cut them back after flowering for a second bloom. They are short lived, but readily self-sow and will naturalize without too much trouble.
