Ornamental Use:
Betony has tall spikes of purple flowers which stand out in the garden. They are well suited for the perennial border or beside a stream. They could also be grown in containers. Betony produces good cut flowers.
Medicinal Use:
Gargling with a tea made from betony leaves can help heal a sore throat. Drinking a cup of betony tea can help cure diarrhea. Betony is generally considered safe to use medicinally.
Culture:
The natural habitat for betony is shady sites in woods and meadows. Betony requires little care besides occasional weeding. large clumps can easily be divided in early spring. Cutting off spent blooms will encourage further flowering. It is best to harvest the leaves before the plant is about to flower, although they can be cut at any time. The leaves can be dried and stored in an airtight container.
